Bone Anchored Hearing Aids
If traditional hearing aids no longer help, you may be a candidate for a life-changing cochlear implant. At Exact Hearing, we work with the
Hearing Implants Australia (HIA) network to assess for candidacy and support you with ongoing care after implantation right here in Kingswood.

What is a Cochlear Implant?

A cochlear implant system is an electronic medical device designed to restore the ability to hear and understand speech by individuals who get insufficient benefit from properly fitted hearing aids. Adults who are not benefiting with an optimally fitted hearing aid, may be a candidate for a cochlear implant.

Unlike a hearing aid, which delivers amplified sound acoustically, a cochlear implant directly stimulates the auditory nerve cells with an electrical current, bypassing the damaged hair cells in the cochlea.

Who Is a Candidate?

Cochlear implants are not just for ‘total hearing loss’ with the advancements in device and surgical techniques, the scope for hearing improvements from a cochlear implant has increased.

If you, or someone close to you, are wearing a well fit hearing aid and struggle to:

🔹 Hear conversations in noisy situations
🔹 Follow conversation without frequent repeat
🔹 Follow conversation without visual cues
🔹 Hear well on the phone
🔹 Highly Rated on Google
🔹 Go to appointments alone for fear of mishearing important information

Criteria for cochlear implantation regularly changes due to advancements in technology and most adults who are candidates for a cochlear implant do not know that they are.

A cochlear implant is a surgically implanted device that bypasses damaged parts of the inner ear and directly stimulates the auditory nerve—helping those with severe hearing loss understand speech more clearly.

If you have moderate to profound hearing loss and gain limited benefit from hearing aids, you may qualify. Our audiologists in Kingswood perform detailed hearing tests and coordinate with ENT specialists to determine suitability.

Hearing aids amplify sound, while cochlear implants send sound signals directly to your hearing nerve. Implants are often recommended when hearing aids are no longer effective.

Cochlear implant surgery is generally safe and performed by an ENT surgeon. Exact Hearing collaborates closely with top local surgeons to ensure the best outcomes and follow-up care.

Costs vary based on device type and funding options. We’ll guide you through rebates via private health insurance, NDIS, or DVA. Many clients pay little or nothing out-of-pocket.

We offer advanced hearing tests in Kingswood using diagnostic tools tailored for cochlear candidates.

Most clients experience significant improvement in speech understanding, especially in quiet environments. While it may not restore “normal” hearing, it dramatically improves communication.

Adaptation varies by person. We offer ongoing mapping, training, and support to help you adjust over time—typically within 3 to 6 months.

For Cochlear Implants we only offer services to adults. In NSW children requiring a Cochlear Implant are treated at NextSense and The Shepherd Centre

No referral is required. Simply call us or book online to schedule a cochlear implant assessment at our Kingswood clinic.
