Traditional hearing aids amplify sound through the ear canal. BAHA devices bypass the ear canal entirely, sending vibrations directly to the inner ear via bone. This makes BAHAs more suitable when the ear canal is blocked, malformed, or prone to infection.

Yes, BAHA surgery is considered minimally invasive and low-risk. It typically takes 30–60 minutes and can sometimes be performed under local anesthetic (Please check with your ENT specialist). A small titanium implant is inserted behind the ear and osseointegrates (fuses) with the bone over a few months. Once healed, the sound processor is attached.

Initial healing typically takes 1–2 weeks. The implant needs 3 to 6 months to fully integrate with the bone. You’ll receive your external sound processor once your audiologist confirms proper healing and implant stability.

For the right candidates, yes bone conduction provides clear, direct, and highly intelligible sound. Many patients report that their speech understanding in noisy environments significantly improves, especially compared to standard air-conduction hearing aids.

Yes! However Exact Hearing do not offer this service, although Hearing Australia may be able to help. Bone conduction devices are widely used in pediatric audiology.
